PERSEPHONE-TANIT: She is a blending of both the Ancient Greek Persephone and the Carthaginian Tanit. As Greek influence increased through the city, many gods began to take on their Greek counterpart's blessings as well. Tanit eventually evolved into Persephone while keeping the Tanit imagery.
TANIT: She was the Sky Goddess of Carthage and ruled over the sun, moon, and stars. She also served as a mother goddess and aided in fertility. She was the head of deity of Carthage and was seen as a protector of the city. The palm tree was one of her symbols as a Carthaginian version of the tree of life.
PERSEPHONE is the goddess of grain/vegetation, and is best known as the wife of Hades who ate the pomegranate seeds; and therefore spends half of the year in the underworld (fall/winter) and half of the year with her mother (spring/summer).
